Lichtenburg Digging Museum depicts the alluvial diamond diggings of this region since 1925, then the richest public diggings in the world. The biggest pure red diamond (pigeon blood red) in the world was found in 1927.
Bakerville is 18 km from Lichtenburg on the road to Zeerust; this is the richest public diggings ever mined. Today a smattering of “bitter-einders” remain, optimistic all, still digging through tones of gravel heaps in the never ending search for the “Big One”.
The public Library and an excellent art gallery which is one of the biggest in the country, housing a valuable collection of paintings by well-known South African artists are situated in the wing of the Civic Centre. Paintings of Gregoir Boonzaaier, Irmin Henkel, Irma Stern, Louis Steyn, Johannes Meintjies, Dirk Meerkotter, Catholic Father Claerhout, Bettie Cilliers-Barnard and the work of sculptor Hennie Potgieter form part of the collection.
The Wondergat approximately 40 km on the road to Mahikeng, the deepest sinkhole in South Africa where deeper-fresh water diving can be practiced. Diving courses are given here and it is one of the most popular inland diving places in the country; according to divers if you have not dived at Wondergat you have not dived at all.
Barberspan Bird Sanctuary lies only 120 km south of Lichtenburg which is a paradise for bird lovers and fishing is also permitted at the beautiful Barberspan Dam.
